What is Tempeh?

Tempeh (pronounced tem-pay) is a naturally delicious plant-based superfood which originated in Indonesia over 300 years ago.

It’s made from just three simple natural ingredients: soybeans, live culture and water. These are simply mixed together and fermented at the right temperature. This process naturally binds the beans together to create a firm block ready for slicing or dicing, without the need for the artificial ingredients and heavy processing of many meat alternatives.

Tempeh is easy to cook, super-versatile and brilliant at taking on flavours, making it the perfect plant-powered protein for all your favourite meals such as stir-fries, curries, pasta, wraps, salads and more!

It’s also absolutely packed with good stuff… First off, it’s a protein powerhouse, with a whopping 20g of protein per 100g – nearly double that of Tofu and similar to many meat products. This makes it great for athletes, fitness buffs or anyone wanting to fulfil their daily protein targets as part of a healthy diet.

It’s also low in saturated fat and cholesterol and rich in unsaturated fatty acids such as Omega 3. These healthy fats have been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, making tempeh a heart-friendly alternative to many meat products.

Added to this, it’s a rich source of vitamins and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus which are good for your bones and teeth, and iron and B12 which help to maintain energy levels.

Tempeh is also gut-friendly. To start, it’s naturally high in fibre, then the fermentation process makes it a source of prebiotics and probiotics, which help support a healthy gut. Some of the probiotic benefit can be lost in cooking, but the fermentation also breaks down the soybeans, making it easy to digest and helping to spread the nutrients more efficiently.
